“this is just the way of things” (to calculate the sun)

to trust the world
but not God in it,
this (they claim)
“the wiser thing,”

busses lift
from raging creeks,
drivers back
away from drink.

teach the rains
that flood as will,
“this is just
the way of things.”

bodies broken?
“chemistry;
simply physics
faltering.”

calculate
the sun for me!
“God” forsake
(and poetry).

flood the populace
and drown
deep within
the facts we bring,

bridging answers
washed away;
such may seem
the wiser thing –

yet this God
I praying say
come my valleyed life
to stay.

– William B. Jones, Oct. 31, 2012
(provoked by the devastation wought by Hurricane Sandy,
those who questioned “why pray this “God” of yours anyway?”
and the God of life’s valleys (Psalm 23) who does not stay away.)
