“There shall no strange god be in thee.”
-Morning prayer, Day 16 (Psalm 81).
There shall no strange god be in thee,
No god enslave, but set to free,
Listen your voice, release from fear,
In song and feast, our joy made near.
No strange god given us to sleep,
Sudden the waters rising deep,
But here to hold in swirling flood,
False river turn, nor love let go.
No strange god given accompany,
clinging the one who clings to me,
No matter thunderhead tow’ring over,
You who raft me my burdens clear.
No strange god, Lord, but you for me,
Earth-risen ledges, honeysuckle sweet,
To sing, O God, our strength in thee,
to ask of you the thing we need.
May be sung to HURSLEY (“Sun of My Soul, Thou Savior Dear”),
or GERMANY (“Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life”).
“No Strange God” incipit False River/New Roads, La., Dec. 2015.
